Myth #1: The Monterra is not road legal
This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear from those interested in the Monterra. The confusion often stems from the process of purchasing an LMTV. When an operator buys an LMTV directly from the government, they may receive a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MSO). However, if the truck is purchased from a private seller, it may already be registered, requiring only a title transfer to the new owner.
At Acela Truck Company, we source LMTVs from various channels to undergo our rigorous Certified Reset Process. We’ve successfully registered titles for hundreds of Monterras. Each completed Monterra not only complies with Montana Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations but also comes with a title ready for transfer—just like any standard vehicle purchase.
That said, it’s important to note that DOT compliance varies by state, and some states have regulations that make it difficult or impossible to register an Acela Monterra or LMTV. If you’re considering adding a Monterra to your fleet, we advise reviewing your state’s DOT requirements in advance.
Myth #2: The Monterra cannot travel faster than 50 mph
Both the original Stewart & Stevenson LMTV and the Monterra are capable of exceeding 50 mph. In fact, the Stewart & Stevenson LMTV could achieve speeds of up to 68 mph on the highway.
When Acela Truck Company remanufactures the Stewart & Stevenson chassis into the Monterra, we offer an optional high-speed gearing upgrade. This upgrade provides a higher gear ratio specifically designed for improved highway travel. Additionally, we reprogram the CAT ECM (Electronic Control Module) to increase the Monterra’s horsepower to 330, further enhancing performance. However, the new Goodyear tires installed on every Monterra are L-rated, which means the Department of Transportation (DOT) restricts the vehicle’s maximum speed to 68 mph to ensure safe operation.
Myth #3: There are not parts available for the Monterra
One of the key features that sets the Monterra apart from the average Stewart & Stevenson LMTV is the extensive remanufacturing process it undergoes. Each chassis is transformed through Acela’s Certified Reset Program, which involves replacing over 650 parts, conducting 300 inspections, and ensuring that every Monterra performs better than it did when it arrived at our facility.
A significant part of our process is upgrading parts that are known to be difficult to source. While this doesn’t completely eliminate challenges with parts availability, it significantly improves the ease of finding and replacing critical components for the Monterra. By proactively upgrading these components, we’ve simplified the repair and maintenance process compared to traditional LMTVs, though some parts may still require lead times.
To further support our customers, we’ve developed AcelaCare After Sales Support. This program provides Monterra owners with access to our online OEM LMTV parts portal, where they can easily search for parts they need, then connect with our team to order and ship those parts. Additionally, our team is available to assist with troubleshooting any issues, helping to diagnose and resolve problems to keep your Monterra running smoothly. Whether you’re the first owner or have purchased your Monterra second-hand, we aim to provide reliable support to keep you driving forward confidently.
