When the Grid Goes Down, the Monterra Powers On

Every year, hurricane season brings a sobering reminder: modern infrastructure is only as strong as the next major storm. Downed power lines, impassable roads, and flooded neighborhoods become real-life challenges that demand reliable, boots-on-the-ground support.

At Acela Truck Company, we build the Monterra High Water/Flood Rescue Truck and the Multi-Mission Monterra to meet these challenges head on. Whether you’re supporting communities with generator deliveries, powering up critical infrastructure, evacuating people from dangerous conditions, or hauling heavy equipment along through storm-damaged areas, the Monterra is a platform that doesn’t back down, no matter how bad the weather gets.

Power Where It’s Needed Most

One of the biggest obstacles after a hurricane is restoring power. When the grid fails, generators become lifelines for hospitals, shelters, public safety stations, and water systems. The Monterra’s unmatched payload capacity, all-terrain performance, and off-grid versatility make it the perfect solution for transporting generators and fuel to where they’re needed most.

Acela fire, rescue, and office of emergency management (OEM) customers utilize their Monterras to deliver generators, transport portable fuel tanks, and serve as mobile command centers in areas where traditional vehicles cannot operate. The Monterra’s high ground clearance and deep-water fording capabilities allow it to move through flooded streets and washed-out roads, because when it comes to emergency response, downtime isn’t an option.

Built for the Worst Conditions

The Monterra’s military-grade background is no accident. Originally built for combat zones, the Stewart & Stevenson LMTV chassis that forms the foundation of every Monterra is designed to thrive in extreme environments. Through Acela’s Certified Reset Program, we take that proven foundation and elevate it with modern upgrades. A new commercial interior, an upgraded HVAC system, and a deep-water fording kit that can be activated with the flip of a switch, and PTO options are just a few of the many upgrades we make to create a highly capable vehicle purpose-built for recovery efforts.

With full-time all-wheel drive, 46” tires, and 22” of ground clearance, the Monterra isn’t just hurricane capable—its hurricane optimized. The Monterra hauls, climbs, swims, and keeps going when other trucks stop.

Supporting First Responders and Critical Infrastructure

Our customers include emergency managers, fire departments, disaster response contractors, and municipalities—all organizations tasked with restoring stability in the wake of chaos. In the hours and days following a storm, Monterras are used for:

  • Transporting mobile generators
  • Supplying water, fuel, and equipment to remote locations
  • Hauling debris or clearing routes
  • Supporting mobile command operations
  • Reaching flooded communities

If your organization plays a role in storm recovery, there’s no better time to assess your fleet readiness than right now—before the first major storm hits.

Plan Ahead, Act Early

Lead times for emergency response vehicles are longer than ever, and demand surges as hurricane season approaches. Waiting until a named storm is already forming off the coast means you’re too late. Our team is actively working with emergency agencies and fire departments to ensure they have the vehicles and support they need before disaster strikes.

When the power goes out and the roads disappear, the Monterra powers on.
